Although there’s not necessarily anything wrong with that, it is probably a good idea to have some understanding of what you’re putting into your body on a daily basis. No matter how long you’ve been vaping, the idea of how vape juice is made may still evade you. Although there’s not necessarily anything wrong with that, it is probably a good idea to have some understanding of what you’re putting into your body on a daily basis. Here’s a quick guide on how vape juice is created.
Vape Juice Ingredients
E-juice has three main ingredients: a solvent, flavors, and nicotine. While some e-juices contain additional ingredients, it’s best to avoid those e-juices and after New Zealands Vaping Regulations come into full force they will not be permitted for sale. There’s no reason to get your caffeine or vitamins when you’re vaping.
To make vape juice, the first two ingredients that need to be combined are the solvent and the flavoring. Then the nicotine is added. The three ingredients are shaken together so they are well mixed. The mixture has to go through a steeping period where all the ingredients sit for several days. This allows the flavor to become more distinct.
Solvents
There are two main types of solvent that are used to varying extents in all vape eliquid: propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG). You can always look at the ingredients in your specific e-juice to find out which ratio your eliquid has. These solvents can make up to 90% to 95% of the e-juice volume.
Vegetable glycerin (VG)
VG is a natural substance processed from vegetable oil and in addition to vaping, is widely used in the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. It’s important to note that it is merely processed from oil but is not oil itself. On its own, vegetable glycerin is colorless and odorless, although it does have a sweet taste. It’s thick and viscous.
Within Vape Juice, VG is an excellent carrier of flavour, and delivers a larger vapour production.
Propylene glycol (PG)
PG is a synthetic food additive that belongs to the same chemical group as alcohol. Like VG, it is colorless and odorless but it doesnt have any taste and has less vicosity.
In vaping, PG is a better carrier of nicotine, and is also used to "thin down" eliquid to make it more suitable for small coil / pod vape devices.
Flavors
Of course, flavorings make up a small amount of your e-juice to give it that distinct taste. If a flavoring is in a vape e-juice you are getting from a reputable company, you can expect it to be a food-grade additive.
Nicotine
Finally, you have pharmaceutical grade nicotine, which is the reason many smokers try to kick their habit through vaping. Although nicotine is an addictive substance, it’s much less harmful when you’re getting it through vaping as opposed to smoking combustible.
